GAUGE:

24 sts = 4 in. (10 cm) over Cable Pattern. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

3/3 LC (3 over 3 left cross) Sl 3 sts to cable needle and hold in front of work, k3, then k3 from cable needle.
PATTERN STITCH
K2, p2 Rib (multiple of 4 sts)
Row 1 (RS): *K2, p2; rep from * across.
Row 2: K the knit sts and p the purl sts.
Rep Row 2 for K2, p2 Rib.

SCARF
Cast on 56 sts. Work in K2, p2 Rib until piece measures 2 1/2 in. (6.5 cm) from beg.
Next Row: P the purl sts and k the knit sts to last 2 sts, p2tog—55 sts at end of row.
Begin Cable Pattern
Row 1 (RS): K1 tbl, p1, k1 tbl, *p2, k6, p2, k1 tbl, p1, k1 tbl; rep from * across.
Row 2: P1 tbl, k1, p1 tbl, *k2, p6, k2, p1 tbl, k1, p1 tbl; rep from * across.
Row 3: K1 tbl, p1, k1 tbl, *p2, 3/3 LC, p2, k1 tbl, p1, k1 tbl, rep from * across.
Row 4: Rep Row 2.
Rows 5-8: Rep Rows 1 and 2 twice.
Rep Rows 1-8 until piece measures about 67 1/2 in. (171.5 cm) from beg, end with a Row 7.
Last Row: P1 tbl, k1, p1 tbl, k2, p6, k2, p1 tbl, k1, *p1 tbl, k2, p6, k2, p1 tbl, k1; rep from * to last st, purl into the front and back of the last st – 56 sts at end of row.

Shape Crown
Row 1 (WS): *K1, p3tog, k1, p6; rep from * across – 90 sts at end of row.
Row 2: *K6, p1, k1 tbl, p1; rep from * across.
Row 3: *k3tog, p6; rep from * across – 70 sts at end of row.
Row 4: *K6, p1; rep from * across.
Row 5: *K1, p3, p2tog, k3tog, p2tog, p3; rep from * across – 50 sts at end of row.
Row 6: *K4, p1; rep from * across.
Row 7: *K1, p2tog, p1, p3tog, p3; rep from * across – 35 sts at end of row.

I loved this pattern! So easy and looks wonderful. I've made two so far this week. I did make one change--I only made 1 inch or so of ribbing before starting the cable pattern and didn't do the increase row after the ribbing. It makes the hat more like a cap which the teenagers and young adults like better. I then started the decrease for the top after about 5.5 inches--still starting after row 3. I will make this hat again and again!
