35 sts = 4 in. (10 cm) in Lace pattern. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Cottage Wrist Warmers Reviewed by Becky Ferguson on 2013-01-26 ****
Great pattern -- I've made 2 pair for me and my daughter and will make more. I use sock yarn (1 ball, the amount for 1 sock makes a pair of Wrist Warmers) and size 3 needles, following the pattern as written, except making them to go up to my elbow.

Keeping the bind-off loose is the tricky bit. I used size 11 needles after trying smaller sizes first. That gave a bind-off edge the same size as the wrist part, so it doesn't cut into the arm at all. Or try what Elizabeth G. Jones suggests in her comment.

The only problem with this pattern (or my cast-on method? -- I plan to investigate others) is that the scalloped (finger end) edge curls out. It's not a big problem, it just doesn't look smooth like the pattern picture. I notice that a couple of the pictures others have posted of theirs looks like theirs curls, too.
