GAUGE:

12 sts + 6 rows = 6 in. [15.25 cm] in pattern. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Elspeth Shawl Reviewed by Rachel Phillips on 2009-10-09 *
I also hated this pattern. The 2nd row was all wrong. It says you should have something like 13 but I and the girl I was working with on this, we both had a different number than the one specified in the pattern!? (we both had the same number though, so it wasn't anything like that and I checked and double checked and counted and counted). I am a pretty good crocheter (intermediate/advanced), but this was awful! We continued anyway with our "wrong" count, and by the time we got to row 7 or 8, we were supposed to have 44 dc, and we had something like 52. The next row, with the bobbles, didn't work at all and we were supposed to have 5 leftover stitches, but we had 3. I love most of your patterns, but this one is terrible! I won't ever try this one again and I'm not finishing the shawl, but ripping it out. I was very disappointed with this one.
