13 sts + 6 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in ripple pattern. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

dc3tog (dc decrease 2 sts) Yarn over, insert hook into st and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops. (Yarn over, insert hook into next st and draw up a loop. Yarn over, draw through 2 loops) twice, yarn over and draw through all loops on hook.

*Work 2 rows each with A, B, and C; rep from * for Color Sequence.

1. To change color, work last st of old color to last yarn over. Yarn over with new color and draw through all loops on hook to complete st. Fasten off old color.
2. The ripple in this Afghan is created by working dc3tog to form 'valleys' and working 3 dc all in one st to form 'peaks'. In each row, take care to work dc3tog over the 3 sts in each 'valley' and 3 dc in the center dc of each 'peak.' You may wish to use stitch markers to mark each peak.
3. The ripple pattern may not be evident in the first couple of rows. Continue to work rows, as instructed, and the ripple pattern will become more obvious.

With A, ch 159.
Row 1: Dc in 3rd ch from hook, *dc in next 4 ch, dc3tog, dc in next 4 ch, 3 dc in next ch; rep from * 11 more times, dc in next 4 ch, dc3tog, dc in next 4 ch, 2 dc in last ch – 13 ripples.
Row 2: Ch 3, turn, dc in first dc, *dc in next 4 dc, dc3tog, dc in next 4 dc, 3 dc in next dc; rep from * 11 more times, dc in next 4 dc, dc3tog, dc in next 4 dc, 2 dc in top of turning ch. Continuing in Color Sequence, rep Row 2 until Afghan measures about 60 in. (152.5 cm) from beginning, end with 2 rows of C. Fasten off.

Weave in ends.

This was my first attempt at an afghan, and after a little help from my mom (who is a seasoned crochet-er), I was able to get it down in no time! I wanted to make a ripple pattern specifically because my grandma always made them. Unfortunately, she passed and is not around to show me her method, but I think she'd like the results even if it wasn't how she made hers :) I think she used the skip two method, though, which I still have no clue how to do. My cats and boyfriend approve whole-heartedly! So warm and cozy for cuddles :)
