GAUGE:

17 sts + 24 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS).

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

CARDIGAN
BODY

Cast on 90 (94, 102, 118) sts.
Knit 5 rows.
Next (Buttonhole) Row: K2, bind off 2 sts for buttonhole, p to last 3 sts, k3.
Next Row: Knit, casting on 2 sts over bound-off sts of previous row.
Keeping first and last 3 sts in Garter st (k every row), and rem sts in St st (k on RS, p on WS), work until piece measures about 2 1/2 (2 1/2, 2 3/4, 3 1/4) in. (6.5 (6.5, 7, 8) cm) from beg, end with a WS row.
Next Row: Rep Buttonhole Row.
Work as established until piece measures 5 (5 1/4, 6 1/2, 8) in. (12.5 (13.5, 16.5, 20.5) cm) from beg, AT THE SAME TIME, working a third buttonhole when piece measures about 4 (4, 4 1/2, 5 1/4) in. (10 (10, 11.5, 13) cm) from beg, and ending with a WS row.

Divide for Fronts and Back
Next Row:

Continue in St st, keeping the 3 edge sts in Garter St, until piece measures 5 1/4 (5 1/2, 6 1/2, 8) in. (13 (14, 16.5, 19.5) cm) from beg. Note: For the 2 larger sizes work the dividing row and then immediately work the fourth buttonhole.
Work a fourth buttonhole row, then work even until piece measures 6 1/4 (6 1/2, 7 1/2, 8 1/2) in. (16 (16.5, 19, 21.5) cm) from beg, end with a WS row.

Charlie's Cardi Reviewed by Kathy Hund on 2014-04-21 ****
I am making this sweater now. I suggest a small change - the decrease neck rows may lay nicer if you decrease every other row rather than every row. I think you would still have length to get them all in. Also - I had trouble with gauge on this yarn. I went down to a sz 6 needle and still can not get 17 st/4 in. Maybe Macadamia color is thicker?
