GAUGE:

18 sts + 24 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS) When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

BLOCK 1 and 2 (make 1)
With A, cast on 77 sts.
Work in St st (k on RS, p on WS) until piece measures about 24 in. (61 cm) from beg. Bind off.

BLOCK 2 (make 1)
With C, make same as Block 1.

BLOCK 3 (make 1)
With A, cast on 50 sts.
Work even in St st until piece measures about 16 in. (41 cm) from beg. Bind off.

BLOCK 4 (make 1)
With C, make same as Block 3.

BLOCK 5 (make 1)
With B, cast on 50 sts.
Work even in St st until piece measures 5 in. (13 cm) from beg, ending with a WS row.
Next Row (Eyelet Row): K4, (k4, k2tog, yo) 4 times, k to end of the row.
Next Rows: Work next 3 rows in St st. Rep last 4 rows 5 more times, then work even in St st until piece measures about 16 in. (41 cm) from beg. Bind off.

BLOCKS 6 and 7 (make 2)
With B, cast on 45 sts.
Work even in St st until piece measures about 5 in. from beg, ending with a WS row.
Next Row (Eyelet Row): K2, (k4, k2tog, yo) 4 times, k to end of row.
Next Rows: Work next 3 rows in St st. Rep last 4 rows 5 more times, then work even in St st until piece measures about 24 in. (61 cm) from beg. Bind off.

FINISHING
Following Assembly Diagram, arrange Blocks into Blanket. To join Blocks, from right side, with crochet hook, join B with a slip st along adjoining edges of any 2 Blocks.
Work single crochet evenly spaced through both adjoining Blocks. Seams are meant to show on right side. Fasten off and rejoin B as needed until all Rectangles have been joined.
From right side, join B with a slip st anywhere along outside edge of Blanket.
Work single crochet evenly spaced around entire outside edge of Blanket, working 3 single crochet in each corner.
Fasten off.
Weave in ends.

Lots of finishing, but fun to make! Reviewed by Dar Brown on 2013-09-23 ****
Made this for my daughter and new son-in-law. I took Karas' advice and added the 3 squares to the other side to make a larger blanket. My daughter insisted on 4 colors, so I got creative with that. Fun pattern to make, but WHAT a lot of finishing work! I didn't understand the "crochet to join" directions, and was unsatisfied with the answer I got from Lion Brand Support, but found great instructions/photos here: http://crochet.about.com/od/crochetstitches/tp/how-to-join-crochet-squares-together-with-slip-stitch.htm
All in all, I found the finished product a little thin and "cheap" feeling--not as luxurious as I had hoped. But still nice for a light blanket. --Darla in California
