GAUGE:

12 sc = 4 in. (10 cm). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

NOTES:

1) Work in back loops only throughout.
2) Carry color not in use loosely along edge of work.

HAT
With A, ch 29.
Row 1: Sl st in 2nd ch from hook and next 9 ch, sc in remaining 18 ch – 28 sts. Drop, but do not cut, A. Join B with sl st in last sc.
Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc tbl in next 18 sc, leave remaining sts unworked, ch 11.
Row 3: Turn, sl st in 2nd ch from hook and next 9 ch, sc tbl in remaining 18 sc. Drop, but do not cut, B. Pick up A. Repeat last 2 rows, alternating A and B, until piece measures 16 in. (40.5 cm) from beg, end with a Row 2 worked with B.
Last Row: With B, turn, sl st in 2nd ch from hook and next 9 ch; bring first row of Hat to meet last row. Working through both thicknesses, sc in last 18 sc to join edges. Fasten off.

FINISHING
Edging
From right side, join A with sl st along straight edge of Hat. Ch 1, sc evenly around edge, join with sl st in first sc. Fasten off.
Tie
With A, ch 32.
Row 1: Sl st in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across. Fasten off.
Knot tie around "squiggles" at top of Hat. Weave in ends.
