GAUGE: 22 sts = about 4 in. (10 cm) in K1, p1 Rib. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
STITCH EXPLANATION: K1, p1, Rib (over even number of sts)
Row 1: *K1, p1; rep from * across.
Rep Row 1 for K1, p1 Rib.

SCARF
With A, cast on 38 sts.
With A, work 15 rows in K1, p1 Rib. Cut A. With B, work 15 rows in K1, p1 Rib. Cut B. Rep from * 14 more times. Bind off.
HAT
With B, cast on 100 sts.
Work in K1, p1 Rib for 15 rows. Change to A and work 15 rows in K1, p1 Rib. Change to B and work 1 row in rib.
Next Row: Work in rib as established across 25 sts, *place a marker, work in rib as established across 25 sts; rep from * twice more– 4 groups of 25 sts each with a marker between each group.
Next Row: K2tog, *work in rib to 2 sts before next marker, k2tog, slip marker, k2tog; rep from * across – 92 sts at the end of this row.
Continue in rib as established, dec 1 st at beg of row, dec 1 st before and after each marker, dec 1 st at end of row.
Rep last row until 12 sts rem. Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread tail through rem sts and gather tog. With same tail, sew back seam.
FINISHING
Weave in ends.

| I made the scarf and it was very easy. I have never made anything with switching colours. It was good practice and I now feel comfortable making more items with changing colours. I added a long frindge to the end of the scarf, it looks great!
