9 sts + 12 rnds = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st worked in the rnd (k every rnd) BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
STITCH EXPLANATION:
M1 (make 1) An increase worked by lifting the horizontal thread lying between needles and placing it onto left needle. Knit this new stitch through the back loop - 1 st increased.
HAT
Earflaps
Note: Earflaps are worked back and forth in rows on circular needle as if working on straight needles.
With circular needle, cast on 3 sts. Rows 1, 3 and 5 (WS): Purl. Row 2: K1, (M1, k1) twice - 5 sts at end of row. Row 4: K1, M1, k3, M1, k1 - 7 sts at end of row. Row 6: K1, M1, k5, M1, k1 - 9 sts at end of row. Row 7: Purl.
Slip sts to a holder.
Rep to make second earflap, but do not slip sts to a holder. Next Row (RS): Knit across sts of second earflap, cast on 9 sts for back, k 9 earflap sts from holder - 27 sts at end of row.
Work 3 rows in St st (k on RS, p on WS). Next Row (RS): Knit across all sts, cast on 13 sts for front of Hat - 40 sts at end of row.
Being careful not to twist sts, join, to beg working in the rnd. Place marker for beg of rnd.
Work in St st worked in the rnd (k every rnd) until piece measures 5 in. (12.5 cm) above earflaps.
Shape Crown
Note: Change to double-pointed needles when there are too few sts to continue on circular needle. Rnds 1, 3, and 7: Knit. Rnd 2: (K3, k2tog) around - 32 sts at end of rnd. Rnd 4: (K2, k2tog) around - 24 sts. Rnd 6: (K1, k2tog) around - 16 sts. Rnd 8: (K2tog) around - 8 sts.
Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread tail through rem sts, gather tog and fasten off.
FINISHING
From RS with crochet hook, join yarn with slip st anywhere along edge of Hat. Work slip st evenly spaced around entire edge. Fasten off. Braid with Pompom
Cut 3 strands of yarn each 20 in. (51 cm) long. Hold strands together and fold in half. Use a crochet hook to draw fold through lower edge of earflap to make a loop. Pull ends through loop and tighten. Divide strands into 3 groups of 2 strands each and braid. Knot ends. Following package directions, make a small pom-pom. Tie pom-pom to end of Braid. Trim ends.
In same way, make a Braid and pom-pom on second earflap.
Weave in ends.
