GAUGE:

15 sts + 22 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) over St st (k on RS, p on WS). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

NOTES:

STRIPE SEQUENCE
Work 2 rows each with *C, A, and B. Rep from * for Stripe Sequence.

STRIPED BAG
With A, cast on 50 sts. Knit 4 rows for top edge of Bag.
Next Row (RS): With B, knit.
Next Row (WS): With B, purl.
Continue in Stripe Sequence and St st (k on RS, p on WS) as established, until Stripe Sequence has been worked a total of 6 times. Bind off.

FINISHING
Fold Bag in half and sew side and bottom seams. Weave in ends. Weave a 24 in. (61 cm) length of A through top of Bag for drawstring. Knot drawstring ends to prevent fraying.

Holiday Gift Bag Set Reviewed by Sue Jackson on 2009-11-16 *****
I made 7 of the striped bags. I knit the bags on a #9, 16" circular needle so I only had to sew up the bottom. I knit the first bag as directed - 2 rows of each color. It was about 36/37 rows. Additional bags were in different patterns - 4 rows of color, 9 rows, 6 rows, etc.(whatever equaled 36) I maintained the "cuff" of 4 knit rows at the beginning. That was the "mark" for the ties; I used white ribbons and white cording for the ties. The three skeins easily produced the 7 bags. These are for my cookie exchange. Each bag will hold the dozen cookies in a Christmas baggie. Fun project! Thank you........Sorry I don't know how to submit pictures.
