Lion Brand® Alpine Wool - Fishermen's Wool - Wool-Ease® Thick & Quick® - Cotton-Ease® (new) - Vanna's Choice® Baby

GAUGE:

Exact gauge is not essential to this project.

NECKLACE
Ball Cluster

Thread a length of A into sewing needle. Insert needle through center of a larger foam ball, pushing gently until needle emerges from opposite end of ball. Pull yarn through ball, leaving a tail of about 2 in. (5 cm). Wrap yarn around ball, then insert needle in ball at same point you began. Continue to push needle through ball, wrapping yarn around ball until it is completely wrapped. To add more yarn, leave a yarn tail at end of old strand and beginning of new strand. When ball is completely wrapped, cut yarn. Thread yarn tails, one at a time, into needle. Insert needle under wraps to hide tails. Repeat wrapping technique to cover one larger ball each with B, D and E; one smaller ball each with A, C, D and G. Remaining small ball will be used for button closure. Arrange wrapped balls into a cluster and decide which will be the right side. With G threaded into sewing needle, sew through wraps on wrong side where balls adjoin to make cluster.

Necklace
First half

Cut a 13 in. (33 cm) length of wire. Wrap about 4 1/2 in. (11.5 cm) of wire with G. Bend wrapped end to make a loop. Continue wrapping to secure loop, then continue wrapping wire. Leave about 2 in. (5 cm) unwrapped at other end of wire.
Cut three 4 in. (10 cm) lengths of F. Wrap lengths, spaced somewhat evenly, over G wraps on wire. Hide F yarn tails under wraps. Bend unwrapped end of wire into a small loop. With G threaded into sewing needle, sew unwrapped loop to wrong side at one side of ball cluster.

Second half
Ring
Wrap binder ring with 2 layers of H. Hide yarn tails under wraps as for craft balls.
Cord
Cut a 20 in. (51 cm) length each of A, C and D. Hold lengths together and fold in half. Wrap folded end over ring, pull ends of yarn through and tighten to join strands to ring. Knot a 13 in. (33 cm) length of B to join. Wrap B loosely over A, C and D lengths, twisting strands slightly. Wrap join with H. Hide one end of H, wrap other end loosely over strands.
Closure
Cut a 6 in. (5 cm) length of wire, and bend into an oval shape. Wrap D around shape to cover completely. With G threaded into sewing needle, stitch over edges of shape, securing D wraps. When outside edge of oval has been completely sewn, use G to wrap end of cord, securing oval to cord.
Felt cord/closure lightly by hand in the sink as follows:
Felting
*Gently rub cord/closure between your hands using mild dish detrgent and warm water, then rinse piece with cold water; rep from * until pieces are lightly felted.
Note: G and H yarns will not felt. Closure and cord are meant to be slightly irregular in shape. Reshape as desired after felting and allow to dry.

Button
With serrated knife, gently cut a thin slice from center of remaining small foam ball. Wrap foam slice with E, wrapping over outside of slice only, do not draw yarn through foam as on balls. Lay button onto felted oval closure.
Cut a 10 in. (25.5 cm) length of G. Separate 2 strands from this length and thread into sewing needle. Leaving a long tail, gently insert needle through center of felted closure, then through button. Take a small straight stitch, then re-insert needle through both layers. Repeat to make an ‘x’ on top of slice. Knot beginning and ending yarn tails on wrong side of felted closure.
With G threaded into sewing needle, sew end of cord to wrong side of ball cluster.
