Lion Brand® LB Collection® Superwash Merino

GAUGE:

28 sts = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st worked in the rnd (k every rnd). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

STITCH EXPLANATION:

kfb (increase 1 st) Knit next st without removing it from left needle, then k through back of same st.
ssk (slip, slip, knit) Slip next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right needle; insert left needle into fronts of these 2 sts and k them together.

PATTERN STITCHES
K1, p1 Rib (in the rnd over an even number of sts)
Rnd 1:
*K1, p1, rep from * around
Rep Row 1 for K1, p1 Rib worked in the rnd.

Seed St Cable (over 8 sts)
Rnd 1:
Sl next 3 sts to cable needle and hold in back of your work, k1, then p1, k1, p1 from cable needle; sl next st to cable needle and hold in front of your work, k1, p1, k1, then k1 from cable needle.

Rnd 4: Sl 1, k2.
Rep Rnds 1-4 for Sl St Cable.

SOCK (make 2)
Leg

Loosely cast on 66 sts. Divide sts evenly onto 3 double pointed needles.
Place marker for beg of rnd and join, being careful not to twist sts. Work in K1, p1 Rib for 3/4 in. (2 cm).
Set up Rnd: *Work Rnd 1 of Seed St cable over next 8 sts, (p2, sl 1, kfb) 3 times, p2; rep from * 2 more times – 75 sts at end of rnd.
Next Rnd: *Work Rnd 2 of Seed St cable over next 8 sts, (p2, work Rnd 1 of Sl St Cable over next 3 sts) 3 times, p2; rep from * around.
Continue in patterns as established until piece measures 6 in. (15 cm) from beg.
Next Rnd: Work as established over 8 sts, k2tog, turn; work the following sts onto one needle for heel flap; p across same 9 sts just worked, remove beg of rnd marker, p27. Place rem 38 sts onto a holder for top of foot (instep).

Heel Flap
Note: Heel Flap is worked back and forth in rows over the rem 36 sts only.
Row 1: *Sl 1, k1; rep from * across.
Row 2: Sl 1, p across.

Place marker for new beg of rnd.

Shape Gusset
Note: Established cable patterns are continued only over the 38 top of foot sts. The remaining sts are worked in St st (k every rnd).
Rnd 1: K across sts on first needle; on 2nd needle, work in patterns as established over instep sts; on 3rd needle, k to end.
Rnd 2: K to last 3 sts on first needle, k2tog, k1; on 2nd needle, work in patterns as established across instep sts; on 3rd needle k1, ssk, k to end.
Rep Rnds 1 and 2 until 66 sts rem.

Foot
Keeping 38 instep sts in patterns as established, rem sts in St st worked in the rnd, work until foot measures about 7 1/2 in. (19 cm) or 2 in. (5 cm) less than desired total foot length.

Shape Toe
Rnd 1: K to last 3 sts on first needle, k2tog, k1; on 2nd needle, k1, ssk, k to last 3 sts on 2nd needle, k2tog, k1; on 3rd needle, k1, ssk, k to end.
Rnd 2: Knit.
Rep Rnds 1 and 2 until 22 sts rem.

Graft Toe
Divide rem sts onto 2 needles. Holding the 2 needles parallel with wrong sides of fabric together, thread a large-eyed blunt needle with one of the yarn ends and work as follows: Insert needle as if to purl into first stitch on front piece. Insert needle as if to knit into first stitch on back piece. Then follow steps 1-4 as outlined below.
1) Insert needle as if to knit through first st on front needle and let the st drop from needle.
2) Insert needle into 2nd st on front needle as if to purl and pull the yarn through, leaving st on needle.
3) Insert needle into first st on back needle as if to purl and let st drop from needle.
4) Insert needle as if to knit through 2nd st on back needle and pull the yarn through, leaving st on needle.
Rep steps 1-4 until all sts are gone. When finished, adjust tension as necessary. Weave in ends.

FINISHING
Weave in ends.

Classic Cable Socks Reviewed by Anne Winslow on 2011-02-17 *****
This is a lovely pattern. I changed it a little at the end when you start the toe. I decrease 2 stitches on pattern needle, put 16 stitches on needle #1, 32 stitches on needle #2 and 16 stitches on needle #3 and then shaped toe until 24 stitches remained. Came out very nice.
