Brioche Stitch Baby Cardigan

Lion Brand® Cotton-Ease®

GAUGE:

25 sts + 46 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in Brioche Rib. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

STITCH EXPLANATION:

BR dec (Brioche right-leaning decrease): K3tog, return k3tog st to left hand needle, sl next 2 sts over k3tog, return k3tog to right hand needle.
BL dec (Brioche left-leaning decrease): Sl 2 together as if to knit, sl 1 as if to knit, k2tog, pass the 3 slipped sts over the k2tog.
B inc (Brioche increase) k2tog but do not sl sts from left needle, yo, k2tog over same 2 sts, sl sts from needle.

NOTES:

1. Brioche Rib is a two-row repeat. Only after two rows are completed will you see a new st on one side.
2. Circular needle is used to accommodate large number of sts. Work back and forth on circular needle as if working on straight needles.
3. Slip all sts as if to purl, unless otherwise instructed.
4. St counts for RS and WS will differ by one st. Sts should only be counted at the end of a WS row.
5. Back, Sleeves, Left and Right Fronts are worked separately, then joined and worked in one piece for Yoke.
6. With yarn in front (wyif) (with yarn in back (wyib)) refers to the side of the work facing you, not to the WS or RS of the work.

Brioche Stitch Baby Cardigan Reviewed by linda wagner on 2011-06-12 ***
I used this pattern for size only. I doubled the band with buttonholes as I went and did other things not in this pattern. I agree this pattern is hard to follow but remember it is an experienced knitter pattern. It seems in places to want the knitter to ad lib on what to do. I recommend someone work on it again and see that it is written in a straight forward manner. I rewrote this pattern for my grand-daughter who is 9 but she still needed help with the joining of sections. It is an adorable baby boy pattern and you have too few baby boy patterns. Please invest some time in this pattern.
The stitch is easy enough once learned but it will not be by someone who only has basic knit and purl skills. I choose another variation of the brioche stitch for my grand-daughter and the sweater has the same lines as your pattern and looks just like the picture which is great.
