Lion Brand® Fishermen's Wool®

GAUGE:

1 'wave' and 6 rows = 4 in. (10 cm). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

dc2tog (dc decrease) Yarn over, insert hook into st and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops. Yarn over, insert hook into next st and draw up a loop. Yarn over, draw through 2 loops, yarn over and draw through all loops on hook.

NOTES:

To change color, work last st of old color to last yarn over. Yarn over with new color and draw through all loops on hook to complete st.

COLOR SEQUENCE
Work 2 rows of each color in the following sequence: *A, B, C, D, and E; rep from * 6 more times (for a total of 70 rows).

AFGHAN
With A, ch 240.
Row 1: Dc in 4th ch from hook, (dc2tog) 3 times, 2 dc in next 6 ch, *(dc2tog) 6 times, 2 dc in next 6 ch; rep from * across to last 8 ch, (dc2tog) 3 times, dc in last 2 ch – 12 'waves'.
Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as first dc here and throughout), turn, dc in next dc, (dc2tog) 3 times, 2 dc in next 6 dc, *(dc2tog) 6 times, 2 dc in next 6 dc; rep from * across to last 8 dc, (dc2tog) 3 times, dc in last 2 dc; change to B in last st.
Rep Row 2, continuing in Color Sequence, until a total of 70 rows have been worked. Piece should measure about 48 in. (122 cm) from beginning. Fasten off.

FINISHING
Weave in ends.

Gaelic Bay Afghan Reviewed by Linda Jiang on 2011-09-20 ****
I am almost finished this Afghan and I am very happy with it. A few points:
-I was very careful with the stitches as the other posters suggested but the blanket is still a little "bubbly". That said, I do not mind and just consider it a feature of this pattern (if you zoom in closely to the picture you can see the "bubbliness").
-I used the Fisherman's wool which is a little "scratchy", but this is a gift for someone in a very cold climate so the wool will serve her well. It is a very warm and heavy blanket. The pattern is very striking.
-Lots of tie-offs because of the color changes but they wound up not taking that long to do.
I also wound up having to buy one ball of extra yarn because I wanted to finish off with a different color. It took me some time to complete but it is not a difficult pattern and I got into a good rhythm with it. I will definitely make again!
