GAUGE:

18 sts + 20 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in K3, p3 Rib unstretched. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

STITCH EXPLANATIONS 3/3 RC (3 over 3 right cross) Slip 3 sts to cable needle and hold in back of work, k3, then k3 from cable needle. 3/3 LC (3 over 3 left cross) Slip 3 sts to cable needle and hold in front of work, k3, then k3 from cable needle. 3/2 RPC (3 over 2 right purl cross) Slip 2 sts to cable needle and hold in back of work, k3, p2 from cable needle. 3/2 LPC (3 over 2 left purl cross) Slip 3 sts to cable needle and hold in front of work, p2, k3 from cable needle. NOTES:

Circular needle is used to accommodate the large number of sts. Work back and forth on circular needle as if working on straight needles.

BACK
Cast on 105 (117) sts. Work in K3, p3 Rib until piece measures about 8 in. (20.5 cm) from beg, end with a WS row.
Bind off 2 sts at beg of next 2 rows for armholes. Continue in rib as established until piece measures 15 1/2 in. (39.5 cm) from beg, end with a WS row.
Cast on 2 sts at beg of next 2 rows.
Shape Sides
Next Row (RS): K2, p2tog, work in rib as established to last 4 sts, p2tog, k2.
Rep last row every 4th row 7 more times, then every other row 7 times – 75 (87) sts after decs have been completed.
Next Row (WS): P2, k2tog, work in rib as established to last 4 sts, k2tog, p2.
Next Row (RS): K2, p2tog, work in rib as established to last 4 sts, p2tog, k2.
Next Row (WS): P2, k2tog, work in rib as established to last 4 sts, k2tog, p2.

Shape Neck
Next Row (RS): K2, p2tog, work in rib as established over 9 (10) sts, sl center 19 (21) sts to a holder for neck, join a 2nd ball of yarn and work in rib as established to last 4 sts, p2tog, k2 – 12 (13) sts rem on each side.
Next Row (WS): P2, k2tog, work in rib as established across first side; work in rib as established to last 4 sts of second side, k2tog, p2. Continue in Rib as established, bind off 5 (6) sts at each neck edge, then bind off rem 6 sts each side for shoulders.

LEFT FRONT
Cast on 42 (54) sts.
Row 1 (RS): *K3, p3; rep from * to last 6 sts, k6 for center front.
Row 2: P6, *k3, p3; rep from * to end. Rep last 2 rows until piece measures about 4 in. (10 cm) from beg, end with a RS row.
Next Row (WS): P6, k3, *p3, k1, M1, k2; rep from * (4) 6 more times, end with p2, M1, p1 – 48 (62) sts
Next Row (RS): K1, 3/2 LPC, 3/2 RPC; *k4, 3/2 LPC, 3/2 RPC; rep from * 1 (2) more times, p3, k6.
Work even in Left Cable pattern until piece measures same as Back to armhole, end with a WS row. Bind off 2 sts at beg of next (RS) row.
Continue even in Left Cable pattern until armhole measures same as Back to end of armhole, end with a WS row.

FINISHING
Sew shoulder seams to top of armholes. Seam sides below armholes.
Armhole
From RS, pick up and k 30 sts evenly spaced along back edge of armhole.
Next Row: *P2, k2; rep from * to last 2 sts, p2.
Next 3 Rows: K the knit sts and p the purl sts. Bind off. Sew ends of rib across bound-off sts of Front and Back. Rep on second arm slit.
Collar
Row 1: From RS, beg at lower Right Front edge, pick up and k 99 (101) sts evenly spaced along Right Front edge, 5 (6) sts across bound-off sts of Back neck, work in K3, p3 Rib across 19 (21) sts on Back neck holder, pick up and k 5 (6) sts across bound-off sts of Back neck, pick up and k 99 (101) sts along Left Front edge – 227 (235) sts.
Next Row (WS): *P2, k2; rep from * 24 (25) more times, place marker, p3, *k3, p3; rep from * 3 more times, place marker, *k2, p2; rep from * to end.
Work in rib as established for 6 more rows.
Next (Buttonhole) Row (RS): *K2, p2; rep from * 8 more times, bind off 2 sts for buttonhole, **work 14 sts in rib as established, bind off 2 sts for buttonhole; rep from ** once more, continue in rib as established to end.
Next (Buttonhole) Row: Work in pattern as established, casting on 2 sts over bound-off sts of previous row.
Work in pattern as established for 8 rows, then rep Buttonhole Rows. Work in pattern as established, for 6 rows.
Shape Shawl Collar
Next Row (RS): Work in pattern as established to 2nd marker, turn, work in pattern as established to next marker, turn, *work in pattern as established to marker, remove marker, work 6 more sts in pattern as established, place marker, turn; rep from * 9 more times; work in pattern as established to end. Bind off.
Back Tab
Cast on 21 sts. Work in St st (k on RS, p on WS) for 2 1/2 in. (6.5 cm). Bind off. Sew Tab across center Back at waist level, drawing ribbing in slightly. Sew button on Left Front edge opposite buttonholes. Sew a button to each end of tab. Weave in ends.
