Spring Essential Top

Lion Brand® Recycled Cotton - LB Collection® Cotton Bamboo

GAUGE:

14 sts + 18 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS) using larger needles with 1 strand each of A and B held tog.

21 sts + 30 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in K1, p1 Rib using smaller needles with 1 strand of A, slightly stretched.

BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

ssk (slip, slip, knit) Slip next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right needle; insert left needle into fronts of these 2 sts and knit them tog – 1 st decreased.
M1 (make 1) An increase worked by lifting horizontal thread lying between needles and placing it onto left needle. Knit this new stitch through the back loop.
M1P (make 1 st as if to purl) An increase worked by lifting the horizontal thread lying between the needles and placing it onto the left needle. Purl this new stitch through the back loop.

NOTES:

Top is worked in one piece, beginning at lower back.


PATTERN STITCH
K1, p1 Rib
Row 1: *K1, p1; rep from * to end.
Row 2: K the knit sts and p the purl sts.
Rep Row 2 for K1, p1 Rib.

TOP
With smaller needles and A, cast on 90 (98, 116) sts. Work in K1, P1 Rib until piece measures 5 1/2 in. (14 cm) from beg.
Next (Dec) Row (WS): K8 (9, 12), (k2tog, k1) 25 (27, 31) times, k7 (8, 11) – 65 (71, 85) sts at end of row.
Change to larger needle and 1 strand each of A and B held tog. Work in St st (k on RS, p on WS) until piece measures 18 (19 1/2, 21 1/2) in. (45.5 (49.5, 54.5) cm) from beg, end with a WS row.
Shape Sleeves
Continue in St st, cast on 7 (9, 9) sts at beg of next 2 rows – 79 (89, 103) sts when all sts cast on.
Work even until piece measures 25 1/2 (27 1/2, 30 1/2) in. (65 (70, 77.5) cm) from beg, end with a WS row.
Shape Neck
Next Row (RS): K23 (28, 35) st and place onto holder for right front, bind off 33 sts, k to end.
Left Front
Continue in St st on rem 23 (28, 35) sts for left front only.
Next (Inc) Row (WS): Purl to last 2 sts, M1P, p2.
Next Row: Knit.
Next Row: Purl.
Next (Inc) Row (RS): K2, M1, k to end.
Next Row: Purl.
Next Row: Knit.
Next (Inc) Row (WS): Purl to last 2 sts, M1P, p2.
Rep last 6 rows 7 more times, AT THE SAME TIME, when piece measures 33 (35 1/2, 39 1/2) in. (84 (90, 100.5) cm) from beg, end with a RS row. Next Row: Bind off 7 (9, 9) sts for left sleeve, finish row. Continue as established, continuing to work neck incs – 33 (36, 43) sts when all incs have been completed, and ending with a WS row. Work 3 rows even (without increasing or decreasing) on left front only.
Shape Underlap
Next (Dec) Row (WS): P to last 3 sts, p2tog, p1 – 32 (35, 42) sts.
Work 4 rows even, then sl these 32 (35, 42) sts to a holder.
Right Front
Place 23 (28, 35) sts for right front back onto needle.
Next (Inc) Row (WS): P2, M1P, p to end.
Next Row: Knit.
Next Row: Purl.
Next (Inc) Row (RS): K to last 2 sts, M1, k2.
Next Row: Purl.
Next Row: Knit.
Next (Inc) Row (WS): P2, M1P, p to end.
Rep last 6 rows 8 more times, AT THE SAME TIME, when piece measures 33 (35 1/2, 39 1/2) in. (84 (90, 100.5) cm) from beg, end with a WS row.
Next Row: Bind off 7 (9, 9) sts for right sleeve, finish row.
Continue as established, continuing to work neck incs – 35 (38, 45) sts when all incs have been completed, and ending with a WS row. Work 2 rows even.
Join Fronts
Next Row (RS): K across sts of right front to last 2 sts, (k tog 1 st from right front and 1 st from left front) twice, k rem sts of left front – 65 (71, 85) sts at end of row.
Work even in St st until piece measures 12 1/2 (14, 16) in. (32 (35.5, 40.5) cm from sleeve bind-off, end with a WS row. Change to smaller needles and 1 strand of A.
Next (Inc) Row (RS): K8 (9, 12), (M1, k2) 25 (27, 31) times, k7 (8, 11) – 90 (98, 116) sts.
Work in K1, P1 Rib for 5 1/2 in. (14 cm). Bind off.

FINISHING
Sleeve Edging
From RS, with larger needles and 1 strand each of A and B held tog, pick up and k48 (50, 56) sts along edge of sleeve. Bind off. Rep for other Sleeve.
Neck Edging
From RS with crochet hook and 1 strand each of A and B held tog, sl st at bottom of right front neck shaping.
Row 1: Single crochet in next st, *sk 1 st, 4 double crochet in next st, sk 1 st, slip st in next st; rep from * evenly around neck. Fasten off. Sew right front to underlap. Sew side and sleeve seams. Weave in ends.

This is a beautiful sweater. However, the fact that it's largely cotton is a problem, because it doesn't have any memory. That is, it stretches very quickly when it's worn, and it doesn't go back, especially the bottom ribbing. It's also a very heavy garment because of all the yarn that's used.

I made the sweater about five inches shorter than the pattern called for, because it looked like it was going to be way too long. I'm glad I made that change.

I also did the same scalloped edge around the sleeves as the pattern calls for around the neckline.
