GAUGE:
9 sts = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS) with A. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
STITCH EXPLANATION:
3/3 LC (3 over 3 left cross) Slip 3 sts to cable needle and hold in front, k3, then k3 from cable needle.
PATTERN STITCHES
Basket Weave (multiple of 8 sts)
Row 1 (RS): Knit. Rows 2-6: *K4, p4; rep from * across. Row 7: Knit. Rows 8-12: *P4, k4; rep from * across.
Rep Rows 1-12 for Basket Weave.
Cable Pattern (13 sts + 3)
Row 1 (RS): K1tbl, p1, k1tbl, p2, k6, p2, k1tbl, p1, k1tbl. Rows 2, 4, and 6: P1tbl, k1, p1tbl, k2, p6, k2, p1tbl, k1, p1tbl. Row 3: K1tbl, p1, k1tbl, p2, 3/3 LC, p2, k1tbl, p1, k1tbl. Rows 5 and 7: Rep Row 1. Row 8: Rep Row 2.
Rep Rows 1-8 for Cable Pattern.
STRIPE SEQUENCE
Work in St st (k on RS, p on WS) in stripes as follows: Rows 1-2: B. Row 3: C. Rows 4-5: B. Row 6: A. Rows 7-8: B. Rows 9: A.
Rep Rows 1-9 for Stripe Sequence.
NOTES:
Scarf edges are designed to curl along some of the pattern stitches.
SCARF
With A, cast on 16 sts. Row 1: With A, work Row 1 of Cable Pattern. Continue in Cable Pattern until piece measures about 19 in. (48 cm) from beg, end with a Row 2 or 8.
Change to B. Next Row (RS): With B, knit.
Beg with Row 2 of Stripe Sequence, work in St st (k on RS, p on WS) and Stripe Sequence until piece measures 57 in. (145 cm) from beg, ending with a WS row.
Change to C. Next Row (WS): With C, work in Basket Weave until piece measures about 74 in. (188 cm) from beg, end with a Row 6 or 12.
Bind off.
FINISHING
Weave in ends.
