Shawl Collar Pullover

Lion Brand® Wool-Ease®

GAUGE:

4.25 sts = 1 in.; 6 rows = 1 in. on larger needles in pat st. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

STITCH EXPLANATION:

PATTERN STITCH

Work in St st (k on RS, p on WS).
Row 7: *K 2, p 2*, rep from * to * across to last 2 sts, k 2.
Row 8: *P 2, k 2, rep from * to * across to last 2 sts, p 2.
Row 9: Rep Row 7.
Row 10: Purl.
Rep Rows 1-10 for pat st.

SWEATER
BACK:
With smaller needles, cast on 90 (98, 106, 114, 122, 134) sts.
Rib Row 1 (WS):
*P 2, k 2*, rep from * to * across, end p 2.
Rib Row 2:
*K 2, p 2*, rep from * to * across, end k 2. Rep Rib Rows 1 and 2 for 9 rows (1½ in.), ending with a WS row. Change to larger needles. Work in pat st until piece measures 26 (26, 27, 27, 28, 28) in. from beg or desired sweater length. Sl sts on a holder, spare needle or length of yarn.

FRONT: Work same as Back until piece measures 18 in. from beg, ending with a WS row.
Shape neck: Next row (RS):
Work in pat across 31 (35, 38, 41, 46, 50) sts, attach a new ball of yarn and loosely bind off 28 (28, 30, 32, 30, 34) sts for center neck, work in pat to end of row. Working both sides at the same time with separate balls of yarn, dec 1 st at each neck edge every 12 rows 3 (3, 3, 3, 4, 4) times -- 28 (32, 35, 38, 42, 46) sts each shoulder. Work even until neck depth is approx 8 (8, 9, 9, 10, 10) in. and piece measures same as Back. Place Front and Back RSs tog (returning Back sts to needles, if necessary) and work 3-needle bind off across shoulder seams.

SLEEVES: With smaller needles, cast on 38 (42, 46, 46, 50, 50) sts. Work in k 2, p 2 rib for 7 rows. Change to larger needles. Beg with a RS row, work in pat st, inc 1 st at each end of next RS row, then every 4th row 19 (19, 19, 19, 21, 21) times more working added sts in pat st -- 78 (82, 86, 86, 94, 94) sts. Work even in pat until Sleeve measures 18 (18, 18, 17, 17, 17) in. from beg or desired length. Bind off loosely

Wrap neck: With smaller needles, starting at right neck edge, with RS facing, pick up 108 (108, 116, 120, 128, 132) sts up right side edge of neck, across back and down left side edge of neck, leaving center Front sts free. (Note: If a different number of sts is picked up, it should be a multiple of 4).
Next Row (WS):
P 1, *p 2, k 2*, rep from * to * to last 3 sts, p 3.
Next Row (RS):
K 1, *k 2, p 2*, rep from * to * to last 3 sts, k 3. Rep these 2 rows until ribbing measures 6 (6, 6½, 7, 6½, 7) in.. Using larger needles, bind off very loosely in ribbing. Overlap wrap neck (traditional left over right for men's sweater, right over left for woman's, if desired). Note: The ribbing will not reach across completely to other side of neckline. Neatly sew to center Front. Fold back for collar.

FINISHING: Mark 9 (9½, 10, 10, 11, 11) in. down from each shoulder seam on Back and Front. Sew Sleeves to body between markers. Sew Sleeve and side seams, leaving bottom rib seam open for vent, if desired. Weave in ends.

Shawl Collar Pullover Reviewed by Stephanie Rankin on 2012-11-13 *****
I made this in Rainbow Falls Moonlight Mohair yarn. It was fun to make because the yarn is beautiful. I chose to do the body in a stockinette stitch and the sleeves in the basketweave pattern stitch. Moonlight Mohair is #5 bulky yarn and the pattern is for a #4 worsted weight yarn. I just made sure my gauge was correct before I started and I didn't have any problems. I also chose not to make the sweater quite as long and adjusted the sleeve length since I have shorter arms. I measured as I knitted to get a custom fit.
