3.5 sts + 5 rows ~ 1in. in reverse St st. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

The back and front are worked sideways. Sideways knits have a general tendency to stretch lengthwise. Finished length after hanging will be approximately 25% longer than just finished piece laid flat.

With larger needles, cast on 56 sts for right side seam, work even in reverse St st (P on RS, K on WS) AT SAME TIME
Create Side Slit:
Row 1 (RS):
P42, k14.
Row 2: K. Repeat these 2 rows 6 times total (slit made).
Create lower Border:
Row 1:
(RS): P52, k4.
Row 2: K.
Next Row:
P52, k4.
Following Row (RS) at end of row, cast on 32 (for Sizes 2X and 3X, cast on 35) for right armhole -- 88 (88, 88, 91, 91) sts. Continue as established, following new border layout:
RS row: P 84 (84, 84, 87, 87), k4.
WS Row: K. Work even for 75 (85, 95, 107, 120) rows; piece should measure 18 (20, 22, 23½, 27) in. from beg. At beg of RS row, bind off 32 (32, 32, 35, 35) sts for left armhole. Work even on remaining 56 sts for 3 rows. Work slit on remaining 12 rows. Bind off.

Cast on 56 sts for left side seam. Work as for back through first armhole shaping 88 (88, 88, 91, 91) sts. Work even for 18 (22, 28, 32, 38) rows.
Shape Neck: On next RS row, bind off 5 sts (for Sizes 2X and 3X work 6 rows dec 1 st at neck edge on each row) .• At end of next WS row, dec 1 st. at beg of following RS row, bind off 2 sts; repeat from • until 33 sts total have been dec; 55 (55, 55, 58, 58) sts remain. Work other side to correspond, at neck edge alternating inc 1 st or 2 sts every row, until there are 88 (88, 88, 91, 91) sts. (Remember for Sizes 2X and 3X to work last 6 inc rows inc one st at each neck edge row.) Work even for 18 (22, 26, 32, 38) rows more.
Beg of next RS row
, bind off 32 (32, 32, 35, 35) sts for right armhole, then continue right side border and slit rows as for back left side.

SLEEVES (knitted conventionally):
With smaller needles, cast on 35 (35, 35, 39, 39) sts. Work in k1, p1 rib for 2 in. end WS. Change to larger needles and continue in reverse St st, Inc one st each end every 4th row 6 (6, 6, 7, 7) times, every 6th row 9 times; 15 (15,15,16,16) inc made, 65 (65, 65, 71,71) sts. Work even until sleeve measures 21in. from beg (or desired sleeve length plus 3 in.). Bind off loosely.

Sew front to back at shoulders. With RS facing and circular needle, beg at right shoulder seam pick up and K approximately 28 (28, 28, 30, 30) sts along left back neck, 39 sts (41 for 2 larger sizes) along right center front, 1 st at center of V, 39 (41) sts for right center front, place marker; 107 (113) sts or odd number. Working in k1, p1 rib (making sure center neck st is knit st) work in rib to within 1 st of center st work slip 2 sts together (at same time) as if to knit k1 st, pass two slipped sts over together (one stitch dec on each side of center knit st) continue in rib. Continue in this manner, working center dec every round for 7 rounds. Bind off in rib. Sew sleeves to front and back leaving the bound off sts free. Sew bound off sts to 3in. top side of sleeves on each side. Sew sleeve and side seams, leaving slits open.

Pattern was poorly written. Not having a diagram made it difficult to assemble.
