9 hdc = about 4 in. (10 cm) in pattern. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

Ch 4. Being careful not to twist, join with slip stitch in beg ch to form a ring.
Row 1: Ch 3 (counts as hdc, ch 1), (3 hdc, ch 1, hdc) in ring - 5 hdc.
Row 2: Ch 3, turn, skip next ch-1 sp, 2 hdc in next hdc, hdc in next hdc, 2 hdc in next hdc, ch 1, hdc in top of turning ch - 7 hdc.
Row 3: Ch 3, turn, 2 hdc in next hdc, hdc in each hdc across to last hdc, 2 hdc in next hdc, ch 1, hdc in top of turning ch.
Repeat Row 3 until piece measures about 39 in. (99 cm) from beg. Fasten off.

Weave in ends.

Natural Comfort Shawl Reviewed by Wanda on 2013-01-04 *****
I loved making this shawl, and I love the shawl! I used the Edwardian color, which turned out pretty, and I added a large black and gray button at about waistline level as an option to keep the shawl closed. I decided not to add fringe or any extra border because it really doesn't need either! It is quite warm and snuggly. I have been crocheting off and on for over 30 yrs but this was my first experience with Homespun--I love it! Thanks LB! Wanda
