GAUGE:

8 sts + 14 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in Garter st (k every row) with 1 strand each of A and B held tog. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

CAP
Beg at lower edge with 1 strand each of A and B held tog, cast on 44 sts.
Knit 6 rows. Cut B and continue with A only.
Knit 8 rows.
Work in St st (k on RS, p on WS) until piece measures 6 in. (15 cm) from beg, end with a WS row.
Shape Crown
Row 1: (K4, k2tog, k3, k2tog) 4 times – 36 sts.
Work even in St st for 3 rows.
Next Row: (K2, k2tog, k3, k2tog) 4 times – 28 sts.
Purl 1 row.
Next Row: (K2tog) across – 14 sts.

Earflaps
Place markers on side of Cap, 2 in. (5 cm) and 4 1/2 in. (11.5 cm) from seam.
With RS facing and 1 strand each of A and B held tog, pick up and k12 sts between markers.
Knit 11 rows.
Next Row: (K2tog) twice, k4, (k2tog) twice – 8 sts.
Knit 1 row.
Next Row: K2tog, k4, k2tog – 6 sts.
Knit 1 row.
Next Row: (K2tog) 3 times – 3 sts.
Slip rem 3 sts onto crochet hook, yarn over and draw through all 3 sts. Cut B.

Brim
With RS facing and 1 strand each of A and B held tog, pick up and k16 sts between the 2 Earflaps.
Knit 11 rows. Bind off.

FINISHING
Fold Brim up to RS and tack to front of Cap.

TASSELS (make 2)
Wrap B around 3 1/2 in. (9 cm) cardboard 20 times. Cut a 6 in. (15 cm) length of B and thread onto large-eyed blunt needle. Insert needle under all strands at upper edge of cardboard. Pull tightly and knot securely near strands. Cut yarn loops at lower edge of cardboard. Cut a 6 in. (15 cm) length of B and wrap tightly around loops 1 in. (2.5 cm) below top knot to form Tassel neck. Knot securely; thread ends onto needle and weave ends to center of Tassel.
Trim Tassel ends evenly.
