GAUGE:
20 sts + 28 rows = 4 in. [10 cm] in pattern stitch. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

I agree with the other two comments. The size 8 could fit an average adult. I just started the back and can tell that it is way too big for a child. The back measures close to 19".... I may end up cutting my loses now before I finish it.....very cute pattern though and an interesting to knit.....
