9 sts = 4 in. (10 cm) over Stockinette st worked in the rnd (k every rnd). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
HAT Cast on 40 sts. Divide sts onto 4 needles and join, being careful not to twist sts. Place marker for beg of rnd.

Great pattern! So easy, fun & quick to make up. I can easily make three hats a day. Still working on one for a Christmas (today) gift! Made six for gifts - each a different color. Will be making more!
