GAUGE:

9 sts = 4 in. (10 cm) over Stockinette st worked in the rnd (k every rnd). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Sparrow Creek Hat Reviewed by Sarah on 2009-11-11 ****
40 stitches to cast is waaayyy too small for an adult. I used 64 and it still didn't fit me, though maybe I just have a large head haha! 64 stitches makes about a 20 inch crown size (can comfortably fit someone with 22 inch crown size though), so around 75 should do the trick next time (but it should be a multiple of 4). Other than that, this is a really soft and thick hat.
