10 sc and 11 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in single crochet. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

I made this for my daughter in a pink and it is beautiful. It was quick to make, however, I spent a lot of time counting each row. As anyone who has used homespun yarn knows, it can sometimes be hard to work with. I can easily see why other reviewers had problems too. My blanket came out a bit small too even thought I did a gauge swatch (I ended up using an N needle). I'd love to make another.... Maybe after some time has passed and I forget that the pattern was a bit annoying.
