16 stitches + 22 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in Garter stitch (knit every row). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size
specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be
sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what
the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person.
If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller
size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
HAT Cast on 80 stitches.
Work in Garter stitch (knit every row) until piece measures about 12 in. (30.5 cm) from cast-on edge. Bind off, leaving a 12 in. (30.5 cm) tail.
FINISHING Sew side seam to form a tube. Weave tail through stitches of bind-off edge and pull tight to gather top of Hat, knot securely.
Pompom Follow Pompom Maker package instructions to make a pompom. Secure pompom to top of Hat.
Weave in ends.

Great pattern, especially for beginners. I easily knitted two of them from one skein. The second one I slightly felted, shrinking it by one inch. The end result was amazing, soft and warm. This is definitely my go to pattern for knitted hats. Thanks Lion Brand !!
