GAUGE: 18 stitches + 22 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in Pattern stitch. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

SHAWL
Cast on 91 stitches.
Row 1: Knit 1, *purl 1, knit 1; repeat from * across.
Row 2: Knit.
Repeat Rows 1 and 2 until almost all yarn has been used. Bind off.
FINISHING
Weave in ends.

I have just finished making this shawl for a baby shower for a 1st time mom who will be breast feeding--a Privacy Shawl. I used 4 ply acyrlic yarn and #10 circ. needle. I changed that pattern alittle. I did the "seed st" for several inches on each short end, and then did the seed st again for 10 stitches along each long edge and garter st. in the entire middle. This DOES HELP (doing seed st. on each end) to prevent the item from "rolling".
Seed st 10 stitches, Garter stitch 71 stitches, Seed st, 10 stitches. Oh, L.B.---whennever I want a pattern (knit or crochet), I come to your site 1st. Have found MANY a great pattern THANKS.
