Garter Tweed Scarf
Lion Brand« Fishermen's Wool®
13 stitches = 4 in. (10 cm) in Garter stitch (knit every row) with 2 strands held together. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
SCARF With 1 strand each of A and B held together, cast on 26 stitches. Work in Garter stitch (knit every row) until piece measures about 65 in. (165 cm) from beginning. Bind off.

This is the perfect starter scarf. I've made a number of items, but I always mess up and end up with more stitches than I began with. Working with 2 yarns at once made me much more aware of when I was about to mess up my stitches!
