14 sts = 4 in. (10 cm) in Garter st (k every row). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

Kfb (knit into front and then back) Knit next st without removing it from left needle, then k through back of same st – 1 st increased.

Cast on 2 sts.
Inc Row: K to last st, kfb in last st – 3 sts.

Dec Row: K to last 2 sts, k2tog – 18 sts.
Rep Dec Row until 9 sts rem.
Continue to inc to 19 sts and dec to 9 sts until piece measures about 60 in. (152.5 cm) from beginning, end with 9 sts. Rep Dec Row until 2 sts rem. Knit last 2 sts tog. Cut yarn and pull through rem loop.
