13 sts + 18 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in Broken Rib pattern. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

Kfb (increase 1 st) Knit next st without removing it from left needle, then k through back of same st.

Broken Rib

Row 2: *K3, p2; rep from *.
Rep Rows 1 and 2 for Broken Rib.

Mesh Stitch
Row 1:
K1, *yarn over, knit 2 sts together; rep from * to last st, k1.
Rep Row 1 for Mesh st.

1. When increasing, work new sts into Broken Rib pattern as established.
2. Left and Right Fronts of Bolero are knit from lower edge to shoulder, then joined to knit the back from neck to lower edge.
3. Refer to schematic to clarify shaping of Bolero.

Cast on 16 sts.
Row 1 (RS): Knit.
Row 2: *K3, p2; rep from * across to last st, k1.
Rows 3 and 4: Rep Rows 1 and 2.
Row 5: Knit.
Row 6 (Inc Row): Kfb in first st (mark beg of this row for center front), k2, p2, *k3, p2; rep from *, end k1 – 17 sts.
Row 7: Knit.
Row 8: P1, *k3, p2; rep from *, end k1.
Rows 9 and 10: Rep Rows 7 and 8.
Row 11: Knit
Row 12 (Inc Row): Kfb in first st, *k3, p2; rep from * across to last st, end k1 – 18 sts.
Continue in pattern as established, inc 1 st at center front edge every 6th row 6 more times, working inc sts into Broken Rib pattern as established, AND AT THE SAME TIME, when piece measures 4 (5, 6) in. (10 (12.5, 15) cm) from beg, end with a WS row.
Shape Side and Sleeve
Next Row: Kfb in first st for side and sleeve shaping, work across row in pattern as established.
Continue in Broken Rib pattern, making center front incs as established, AT THE SAME TIME, inc 1 st at side edge every 4th row twice, then every other row 6 (7, 8) times. Cast on 26 (28, 32) sts at side edge for sleeve and continue in Broken Rib pattern as established for 3 in. (7.5 cm) – 59 (62, 67) sts.
Shape Neck
Continue in pattern as established, AT THE SAME TIME, dec 1 st at center front edge (by working k2tog) every other row 8 (9, 10) times – 51 (53, 57) sts. Mark each end of last row for shoulder line. Work 2 rows even in Broken Rib, then inc 1 st at neck edge every other row 4 (5, 6) times, then cast on 6 (8, 10) sts at neck edge – 61 (66, 73) sts. Work 1 row even in Broken Rib and sl sts to a holder.

Work same as Left Front, reversing all shaping.

Place sts of Left and Right Front onto needle with neck edges meeting at center – 122 (132, 146) sts. Work in Broken Rib as established across all sts until back half of sleeve measures same as front half of sleeve (measured from markers at shoulder line). Bind off 26 (28, 32) sts at beg of next 2 rows – 70 (76, 82) sts. Dec 1 st at each side every other row 6 (7, 8) times, and then every 4th row 3 times – 52 (56, 60) sts. Work even in Broken Rib until Back measures same as Fronts. Bind off.
