GAUGE:

16 hdc = 4 in. (10 cm). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Fisherman Road Scarf Reviewed by Jessica on 2013-12-01 ****
I really liked this pattern. After having read the comments about the blockiness of the segments, I decided to use different size hooks. I recommend dropping down one size for the hdc rows (dividing, grit, and lacy grit). That kept the scarf more even overall, although the ladder stitch was still a little smaller than the others. The scarf came out beautifully, though. I highly recommend it and as long as you follow the directions, none of the stitches are difficult. An easy project for sure.
