16 sts = 4 in. (10 cm) in Stockinette st (k on RS, p on WS). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

4/4 RC (4 over 4 right cross) Slip 4 sts to cable needle and hold in back, k4, then k4 from cable needle.
3/3 RC (3 over 3 right cross) Slip 3 sts to cable needle and hold in back, k3, then k3 from cable needle.

Simple Cable Scarf Reviewed by William Bray on 2015-01-07 ****
This scarf is great for what it is. I began doing this scarf so I could learn how to do cables and it has shown me the way... I invite anyone who wants to learn this great design feature to do this pattern. As others have mentioned before me. The pattern is designed in a way that allows a curl to develop. I have modified the pattern to allow for a constant K5 on the edges and adjusting the p to 3 instead of 5. With that, it is coming out fantastic!
