20 sts + 40 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in Garter st (k every row). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

Cast on 96 (104, 112, 128) sts.
Work in Garter st (k every row) until piece measures 4 1/2 (5, 5 1/2, 6 1/2) in. (11.5 (12.5, 14, 16.5) cm) from beg, end with a RS row.
Divide for Fronts and Back
Next Row (WS):
K25 (27, 29, 33) sts and sl these sts to a holder for Left Front, k46 (50, 54, 62) sts and sl these sts to a holder for Back, k remaining 25 (27, 29, 33) sts for Right Front.
Right Front
Continue in Garter st on Right Front sts only for 3 (3, 3 1/2, 4) in. (7.5 (7.5, 9, 10) cm), end with a WS row.
Next Row (Buttonhole Row): Sl1, k2, yarn over, k2tog, k to end of row.
Work even for 9 rows, then rep Buttonhole Row.
Work one WS row.
Neck Shaping
Next Row (RS):
Bind off 13 (16, 17, 19) sts, k to end of row - 12 (11, 12, 14) sts.
Work even for 2 rows.
Bind off.
Slip sts for Back from holder back onto needle. Join yarn and work even until Back measures 9 1/2 (10, 11, 12) in. (24 (25.5, 28, 30.5) cm) from beg.
Bind off.
Left Front
Slip sts for Left Front from holder back onto needle.
Join yarn and work as for Right Front, reversing shaping and omitting buttonholes.

SLEEVES (make 2)
Cast on 23 (23, 28, 29) sts. Work in Garter st for 4 (4, 5, 6) rows. Increase 1 st each end of next row. Rep last 5 (5, 6, 7) rows 10 (10, 11, 13) times - 45 (45, 52, 57) sts. Work even until Sleeve measures 6 (7, 8, 10) in. (15 (18, 20.5, 25.5) cm) from beg. Bind off.

Cast on 75 (80, 85, 90) sts. Work in Garter st until piece measures 6 (6 1/2, 7, 8) in. (15 (16.5, 18, 20.5) cm) from beg. Bind off.

Sew shoulder seams. Sew in Sleeves. Sew Sleeve seams. Fold Hood in half and seam bound-off edge for back of Hood. Sew Hood to neck edge. Sew buttons to Left Front, opposite buttonholes.
Wrap yarn around cardboard 20 times. Cut a piece of yarn 20 in. (51 cm) long and thread onto large-eyed blunt needle. Insert needle under all strands at upper edge of cardboard. Pull tightly and knot securely near strands. With crochet hook, chain remaining length of tied strand for about 4 in. (10 cm). Fasten off. Thread chain to inside of Hood and knot to secure.
Weave in ends.

Favorite Hoodie Reviewed by Sharry Shifflet on 2015-09-30 *****
This is the first sweater I ever made & it was super simple. I used the 24-36 mo. size. My grand-daughter is a 24 month & it just fit her perfect. Won't be much room to grow for her. I also croched a shell border all around it & around the sleeves. Looks adorable!
