Playtime Baby Set

GAUGE: 20 sts + 40 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in Garter st (k every row) with larger needles;
21 sts + 30 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS) with larger needles.
BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
STITCH EXPLANATION: 3/3 RC (3 over 3 right cross) Slip 3 sts to cable needle and hold in back, k3, then k3 from cable needle.
3/3 LC (3 over 3 left cross) Slip 3 sts to cable needle and hold in front, k3, then k3 from cable needle.
Kfb (knit in front and back) Knit into front and then back of same st 1 st increased.

 SWEATER FRONT
With smaller needles, cast on 52 (56, 62) sts.
Knit 7 rows. Change to larger needles.
Inc Row (WS): K22 (24, 27), kfb in next st, k1, kfb in next st, k2, kfb in next st, k1, kfb in next st, k22 (24, 27) 56 (60, 66) sts at the end of this row.
Rows 1, 5 and 7 (RS): Knit.
Rows 2, 4 and 6: K22 (24, 27), p12, k22 (24, 27).
Row 3: K22 (24, 27), 3/3 RC, 3/3 LC, k22 (24, 27).
Row 8: K22 (24, 27), p12, k22 (24, 27).
Rep Rows 1-8 until piece measures 8 1/2 (9 1/2, 10 1/2) in. (21.5 (24, 26.5) cm) from beg, end with a WS row.
Shape Neck
Next Row (RS): K16 (17, 19), join a second ball of yarn and bind off 24 (26, 28) sts, knit to end.
For the remainder of the Front, you will be working both sides at the same time, using separate strands of yarn.
Next Row: On first side, k to bound off sts, on second side, bind off 2 sts, k to end.
Rep last row once 2 sts have been bound-off at each side of neck, 14 (15, 17) sts rem for each shoulder.
Work even in Garter st (k every row), continuing to work each side with a separate strand of yarn until piece measures 10 (11, 12) in. 25.5 (28, 30.5) cm from beg. Bind off.

 BACK
With smaller needles, cast on 52 (56, 62) sts. Work in Garter st for 7 rows.
Change to larger needles and continue in Garter st until piece measures 9 1/2 (10 1/2, 11 1/2) in. (24 (26.5, 29) cm) from beg, mark last row as WS.
Shape Neck
Next Row (RS): K16 (17, 19), join a second ball of yarn and bind off next 20 (22, 24) sts, knit to end.
Working both sides at once, with separate strands of yarn (in same way the Front was worked), bind off 2 sts at each neck edge 14 (15, 17) sts rem for each shoulder. Work even until piece measures same length as Front. Bind off.

 SLEEVES (make 2)
With smaller needles, cast on 27 (29, 32) sts. Work in Garter st for 21 rows.
Change to larger needles.
Next (Increase) Row: K1, kfb in next st, k to last 2 sts, kfb in next st, k1.
Continue in Garter st, AT THE SAME TIME rep Increase Row every 4th row 3 (3, 0) times, then every 6th row 5 (5, 8) times 45 (47, 50) sts. Work even until piece measures 7 1/2 (8, 9) in. (19 (20.5, 23) cm) from beg.
Bind off.
FINISHING
Sew right shoulder seam. From RS with smaller needles and beg at left front shoulder, pick up and knit 42 (48, 54) sts evenly spaced around front neck edge, 32 (34, 36) sts along back neck edge to left back shoulder 74 (82, 90) sts.
Knit 1 row.
Neckband
Row 1 (RS): K3, *p4, k4; rep from * to last 7 sts, p4, k3.
Row 2: P3, *k4, p4; rep from * to last 7 sts, k4, p3.
Rep Rows 1 and 2 for 1 1/4 in. (3 cm), end with a RS row.
Knit 1 row on WS for turning row.
Rep Rows 1 and 2 for 1 1/4 in. (3 cm) from turning row.
Bind off.
Seam left shoulder and neckband. Fold neckband to WS along turning row and sew in place.
Place markers 4 1/2 (4 3/4, 5) in. (11.5 (12, 12.5) cm) down from shoulders on Front and Back. Sew Sleeves between markers. Sew Sleeve and side seams. Weave in ends.

PANTS
LEG (make 2)
With smaller needles, cast on 37 (45, 51) sts. Work in Garter st for 10 rows.
Next Row (RS): *K8 (10, 11), kfb in next st, rep from * 3 more times, k1, (1, 3) 41 (49, 55) sts at the end of this row.
Change to larger needles and work in St st (k on RS, p on WS) for 3 rows.
Note: When instructions are to proceed 0 (1, 2) times, this means that for a specific size, in this case the smallest size, you are not working a repeat or a st.
Next (Increase) Row: K1, kfb in next st, k to last 2 sts, kfb in next st, k1.
Continue in St st, AT THE SAME TIME, rep Increase Row every 4th row 11 (10, 9) times, then every 6th row 0 (1, 2) times 65 (73, 79) sts. Work even until piece measures 7 1/2 (9, 10) in. (19 (23, 25.5) cm) from beg, end with a WS row.
Shape Crotch
Next Row: Bind off 3 (4, 4) sts, k to end of row.
Next Row: Bind off 3 (4, 4) sts, p to end of row 59 (65, 71) sts.
Next Row: K1, k2tog, k to end of row.
Next Row: P1, p2tog, p to end of row.
Rep last 2 rows until 49 (55, 61) sts rem.
Work even until piece measures 5 3/4 (6 1/4, 7 1/4) in. (14.5 (16, 18.5) cm) from beg of crotch shaping, end with a WS row.
Next Row: K0 (0, 1), *K5 (9, 18) k2tog, rep from * across row 42 (50, 58) sts.
Waistband
Change to smaller needles.
Purl 1 row.
Row 1 (RS): K3, *p4, k4; rep from * to last 7 sts, p4, k3.
Row 2: P3, *k4, p4; rep from * to last 7 sts, k4, p3.
Rep Rows 1 and 2 for 1 in. (2.5 cm), end with a Row 1.
Knit 1 row on WS for turning row.
Rep Rows 1 and 2 for 1 in. (2.5 cm) from turning row.
Bind off.
FINISHING
Sew crotch seams, then sew Leg seams. Fold waistband to WS along turning row for casing, and sew in place, leaving an opening for elastic. Thread elastic through casing. Try Pants on child and adjust length of elastic. Sew ends of elastic together, then sew opening in casing closed.
Weave in ends.

| I agree with earlier comments. It is unrealistic to expect a hand wash, line dry play set to be an actual play set. Maybe if it was mad of wool-ease, which CAN be machine washed and dried, as it is a wool blend, not pure wool.
