OWL
BODY
With A, cast on 56 sts. Divide sts onto 3 needles and join, being careful not to twist. Place marker for beg of rnd.
Work in St st in the rnd (k every rnd) until piece measures 6 in. (15.5 cm) from beg.
Next Rnd: K2tog, k24, k2tog, place a second marker, k2tog, k to last 2 sts, k2tog.
Next Rnd: K2tog, k to 2 sts before second marker, k2tog, slip marker, k2tog, k to last 2 sts, k2tog.
Next 4 Rnds: Knit.
Shape Ears
Note: Ears are worked back and forth in rows on 2 needles.
Row 1: K6, bind off next 12 sts (top of head), k12 sts and slip to a holder, bind off next 12 sts (top of head), k6.
Work back and forth in rows on 12 sts remaining on needles as follows:
*Row 1: Purl.
Row 2: K2tog, k to last 2 sts, k2tog–10 sts.
Rep last 2 rows 3 times–4 sts.
Purl 1 row, knit 1 row.
Bind off. **
Re-join yarn and k across 12 sts on holder. Rep from * to ** to make second ear. Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread tail into blunt needle, fold ear in half and sew shaped side tog, then seam bound-off sts at top of head tog, sew shaped side of second ear.
BASE
With A, cast on 5 sts. Work back and forth in rows on 2 needles.
Row 1: Purl.
Row 2: Inc in first st, k to last st, inc in last st – 7 sts.
Rep last 2 rows 3 more times – 13 sts.
Work in St st (k 1 row, p 1 row) until piece measures about 2 3/4 in. (7 cm) from beg, end with a purl row.
Next Row: K2tog, k to last 2 sts, k2tog – 11 sts..
Next Row: Purl.
Rep last 2 rows 3 more times. Bind off rem 5 sts.
WINGS (make 2)
With A, cast on 4 sts. Work back and forth in rows on 2 needles.
Row 1: Purl.
Row 2: Inc in first st, k to last st, inc in last st – 6 sts.
Rep last 2 rows 3 more times– 12 sts.
Work in St st (k 1 row, p 1 row) until piece measures about 3 in. (7.5 cm) from beg. Bind off.
Fold piece in half, sew shaped sides tog.
BEAK (make 2)
With B, cast on 5 sts.
Work back and forth in rows on 2 needles.
Row 1: Purl.
Row 2: K2tog, k1, k2tog – 3 sts.
Rep last 2 rows once – 1 st.
Fasten off last st.
EYES (make 2)
With C and crochet hook, ch 4. Sl st in beg ch to form a ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 1, 8 sc in ring, join with a sl st to top of beg ch.
Rnd 2: Ch 1, *sc in next st, 2 sc in next st; rep from * around, join with sl st in beg ch – 12 sts.
Rnd 3: Rep Rnd 2 – 16 sts. Fasten off.
Join D with a sl st in any st, ch 1.
Rnd 4: With D, sc in each st around, working loosely so that piece stays flat; join with sl st in beg ch. Fasten off.
BOW TIE
With E, cast on 16 sts.
Rows 1 and 3: Knit.
Row 2: Purl.
Row 4 (WS): Knit.
Rows 5 and 7: Purl.
Row 6: Knit.
Row 8: Purl.
Rows 9-11: Rep Rows 1-3.
Bind off.
Wrap a length of E around center of Bow Tie. Knot ends of wrap.
Weave in ends.
FINISHING
Stuff Body firmly with fiberfill and sew on Base. Sew 2 Beak pieces tog. Sew Wings, Eyes, Beak and Bow Tie to Body. Weave in ends.
