22 sts = 4 in. (10 cm) in Lace Stitch worked in the rnd. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

Lace St (even number of sts)
Rnds 1 and 3:
*K2, p2; rep from * around.
Rnd 2: *Yo, k2tog, p2; rep from * around.
Rnd 4: *K2tog, yo, p2; rep from * around.
Rep Rnds 1-4 for Lace St.

K2, p2 Rib (worked in the rnd)
Rnd 1:
*K2, p2, rep from * around.
Rnd 2: K the knits and p the purls.
Rep Rnd 2 for K2, p2 Rib.

Beg at crown, cast on 6 sts.
Divide sts onto 3 needles and join, being careful not to twist sts. Place marker for beg of rnd.
Inc Rnd: K into front and back of each st – 12 sts.
Next Rnd: Knit.
Next Rnd: *K1, inc in next st; rep from * around – 18 sts.
Next Rnd: Knit.
Next Rnd: *K2, inc in next st; rep from * around – 24 sts.
Continue as established, working inc rnd every other rnd, having 1 more st between incs until you have a total of 120 sts.
Note: Change to circular needle once sts have been sufficiently increased.
Next Rnd: Work Rnd 1 of Lace St around.
Continue as established, until Rnds 1-4 of Lace St have been worked a total of 5 times.
Work in K2, p2 Rib for 1 in. (2.5 cm).
Bind off.

Weave in ends.
