Lion Brand® LB Collection® Organic Wool

GAUGE:

16 sts + 24 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS) using larger needles. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

ssk (slip, slip, knit) Slip next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right needle; insert left needle into fronts of these 2 sts and knit them together.

NOTES:

1) Sleeves are knit first, then the body of the coat is worked in one piece, beginning at the lower edge of the body. The sleeves and body are joined to work the yoke.
2) Circular needle is used to accommodate large number of sts. Work back and forth on circular needle as if working on straight needles.

SLEEVES (make 2)
With smaller double pointed needles, cast on 36 sts. Divide sts evenly onto 3 needles. Place marker for beg of rnd and join, being careful not to twist sts.
Work 6 rnds in Garter st worked in the rnd (k 1 rnd, p 1 rnd).
Change to larger double pointed needles.
Work in St st worked in the rnd (k every rnd), inc 1 st at beg and end of every 6th rnd 3 (4, 5, 6) times – 42 (44, 46, 48) sts.
Continue even until piece measures 5 1/2 (6 1/2, 7 1/2, 8 1/2) in. (14 (16.5, 19, 21.5 cm) from beg.
Next Rnd: Bind off 3 sts, k to last 3 sts, bind off last 3 sts – 36 (38, 40, 42) sts. Cut yarn. Slip sts onto a holder and set piece aside.

Babette Baby Coat Reviewed by CHRISTINE VAN TASSEL on 2009-11-15 *****
Wow. I am so impressed with this flawless pattern. I knit this in the smallest size for my 9 month old and the fit is fantastic. Sure, she won't be in it long but it knit up so quickly I look forward to making another. I made this one in wool for winter and the next one will be cotton for spring/fall. I love the minimal seaming and the pattern was flawless. I was inspired to try kitchener's stitch for binding off the hood (my first time doing it) and the result is absolutely beautiful. If you want to try it, simply divide your stitches on the circular needles, make sure the right sides are facing out, then work kitchener's stitch with the tail from the end of last row inward to the top/back of head. Lovely, flat, invisible bind off. I have made a lot of Lion Brand free patterns and this is the best one so far. Beautifully contoured but easy to do. This is a great first pattern for a shaped sweater to build skills and confidence. I won't make another boxy sweater ever again.
