GAUGE:
12 1/2 sts + 25 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in Garter st (k every row). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

SWEATER
BACK With smaller needles, cast on 30 (33, 36) sts and work in K1, p1 Rib for 1 in. (2.5 cm). Change to larger needles and work in Garter st until Back measures 9 1/2 (10 1/2, 11 1/2) in. (24 (26.5, 29) cm) from beg. Bind off.
POCKET LINING (make 2) With larger needles, cast on 9 sts. Work in Garter st for 2 in. (5 cm). Transfer sts to st holder.

Neck Shaping

Decrease 1 st at neck edge every row 6 times – 9 (10, 11) sts. Work even until piece measures 9 1/2 (10 1/2, 11 1/2) in. (24.5 (26.5, 29) cm) from beg. Bind off. SLEEVES (make 2) With smaller needles, cast on 20 (21, 22) sts and work 4 rows in K1, p1 Rib.
Change to larger needles and work in Garter st, increasing 1 st each end of every 6th row 6 times – 32 (33, 34) sts. Work even until Sleeve measures 8 (8 1/2, 9) in. (20.5 (21.5, 23) cm) from beg. Bind off.
FINISHING Sew shoulder seams.

Left Front Edging From RS with smaller needles, pick up and k1 st along side of neck , pick up and k1 st in each ridge of Garter st, and 4 sts along bottom ribbing. Bind off.
Right Front Edging From RS with smaller needles, pick up k4 sts along bottom ribbing, pick up and k1 st in each ridge of Garter st, and 1 st along side of neck. Bind off.
Sew Pocket Linings to WS of Fronts. Sew Sleeves to body. Sew side and Sleeve seams. Weave in ends. Sew buttons opposite buttonholes.
HAT Cast on 48 (52, 56) sts.
Work in Garter st until piece measures 6 1/2 (7 1/2, 8) in. (16.5 (19, 20.5) cm) from beg.
Next Row: (K2tog) across – 24 (26, 28) sts.
Next Row: Knit.
Next Row: (K2tog) across – 12 (13, 14) sts.
Cut yarn leaving a 12 in. (30.5 cm) tail. Thread tail into large-eyed blunt needle and thread through remaining sts, pull tightly to secure.
FINISHING Sew seam. Weave in ends.

Cute sweater! I made this for my neighbors baby. This was my first sweater and it turned out great. I doubled the yarn and used 10 1/2 needles. It came out nice and thick. She wore it all winter with matching mittens and hat!
