20 sts + 42 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in Garter st (k every row).

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

K1, p1 Rib (over odd number of sts)
Row 1 (WS):
P1, *k1, p1; rep from * across.
Row 2: K the knit sts and p the purl sts.

With larger needles, cast on 15 sts. Work in Garter st for 2 in. (5 cm). Transfer sts to st holder.

With smaller needles, cast on 30 (32, 34) sts and work in K1, p1 Rib for 1 in. (2.5 cm). Change to larger needles and work in Garter st until Right Front measures 3 in. (7.5 cm) from beg, end with a WS row.

Next Row: K8 (9, 10) sts, bind off 15 sts, k to end.
Next Row: K7 (8, 9) sts, knit 15 sts of one Pocket Lining from holder, k to end of row.

Neck Shaping
Next Row (RS):
Bind off 8 (9, 10) sts, k to end of row - 22 (23, 24) sts.
Decrease 1 st at neck edge every row 6 times - 16 (17, 18) sts. Work even until Right Front measures 9 1/2 (10 1/2, 11 1/2) in. (24.5 (26.5, 29) cm) from beg. Bind off. Mark placement for 4 buttons: First button just above ribbing, top button 1/2 in. (1.5 cm) below neck shaping and 2 evenly spaced between.

Work as for Right Front, reversing all shaping, AT THE SAME TIME, work buttonholes opposite markers on RS rows as follows:
Buttonhole Row (RS): K to last 4 sts, yarn over, k2tog, k2.

Isabel Cardigan And Hat Reviewed by Corinne Fowler on 2011-12-26 ****
I've made this hat three times, so obviously I do like it, but every time it seems a little loose. I've tried decreasing the cast on stitches and also knitting tighter, but I think an easy remedy, no matter what size you choose, is to just go down a needle size for the first few rows. I'm going to try this for the next one I make. Otherwise, really easy pattern to make and finish.
