10 stitches = 4 in. (10 cm) in Garter stitch (knit every row). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size
specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be
sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what
the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person.
If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller
size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
Circular needle is used to accommodate large number of stitches. Work back and forth in rows as if knitting with straight needles.
BLANKET Cast on 5 sts.
Row 1: Knit.
Row 2: K 3, yo, k 2.
Row 3: K 3, yo, k 3.
Row 4: K 3, yo, k to end of row.
Repeat last row until you have 99 sts on needle.
Next (decrease) row: K 2, k2tog, yo, k2tog, k to end of row.
Repeat last row until 5 sts remain. Bind off.
FINISHING Weave in ends.

I agree with the previous review that I did not care for the flimsiness of the beginning and ending corners. I cast on the number of stitches instructed by the pattern and then knit two rows before beginning the pattern and also knitted two rows before binding off. I found this to be much sturdier than the original pattern.
