Coastal Granny

Lion Brand® Vanna's Choice®

GAUGE:

11 dc = 4 in. (10 cm). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

Popcorn Work 5 dc in indicated st, remove hook from loop, insert hook into first dc of 5-dc group, then back into loop of 5th dc and draw loop through.

NOTES:

To change color at end of rnd, insert hook in joining st, yo with new color, draw through loops on hook to complete sl st.

COLOR SEQUENCE
*Work 1 rnd each of A, B, C, and D; rep from * around for Color Sequence.


AFGHAN
With A, ch 8; join with sl st in first ch to form a ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 3 (counts as first dc of popcorn), work popcorn in ring, *ch 5, popcorn in ring; rep from * twice more, ch 5; join with sl st in top of first popcorn; change to color B.
Rnd 2: Ch 3 (counts as first dc here and throughout), (2 dc, ch 2, popcorn, ch 2, 2 dc) in next ch-5 sp, *dc in next popcorn, (2 dc, ch 2, popcorn, ch 2, 2 dc) in next ch-5 sp; rep from * twice more; join with sl st in top of beg ch; change to color C.
Rnd 3: Ch 3, dc in next 2 dc, *2 dc in next ch-2 sp, ch 2, popcorn in popcorn, ch 2, 2 dc in next ch-2 sp, dc in next 5 dc; rep from * twice more, 2 dc in next ch-2 sp, ch 2, popcorn in popcorn, ch 2, 2 dc in next ch-2 sp, dc in next 2 dc; join with sl st in top of beg ch; change to color D.
Rnd 4: Ch 3, dc in next 4 dc, *2 dc in next ch-2 sp, ch 2, popcorn in popcorn, ch 2, 2 dc in next ch-2 sp, dc in next 9 dc; rep from * twice more, 2 dc in next ch-2 sp, ch 2, popcorn in popcorn, ch 2, 2 dc in next ch-2 sp, dc in next 4 dc; join with sl st in top of beg ch; change to color A.
Rnds 5-31: Rep Rnd 4, adding 4 more dc each side (this occurs naturally as you dc in each dc). Continue to follow Color Sequence.
At end of Rnd 31, fasten off.

FINISHING
Border
With RS facing, join D with sl st in any popcorn. Ch 1, turn, *sc in next ch-2 sp, sc in each st around to next ch-2 sp, sc in next ch-2 sp, work 3 sc in next popcorn; rep from * around, end with sl st in beg ch to join. Fasten off. Weave in ends.

My new favorite afghan pattern! Very easy - - no counting stitches or rows once you get past the 4th row. Looks just as nice in a solid color or variegated yarn instead of stripes.
