GAUGE:

14 sts = about 4 in. (10 cm) in Garter st (k every row).

BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

kfb (knit into front and then back) An increase worked as follows: 1. Knit the next st through the front loop, but do not remove the st from your left hand needle. 2. Knit the same st once more, this time inserting your needle through the back loop of the st. You will have created 2 loops (sts) on your right hand needle. 3. Drop the st from your left hand needle - you have increased 1 st.

NOTES:

1. In First Half, stitches are increased at the beg and decreased at the end of every other row, to form diagonal edges of one leg of V.
2. In Second Half, the increases and decreases are worked on the opposite edges, to form diagonal edges of other leg of V.
3. Stitch markers are used to keep track of which edge is the increase edge and which the decrease edge.

SHAWL
First Half
Cast on 48 sts.
Row 1: Sl 1, kfb, k to last 2 sts, k2tog.
Place a marker at beg of Row 1 for increase edge. Place a different color marker at end of Row 1 for decrease edge.
Row 2: Sl 1, k to end of row.
Rep last 2 rows until piece measures 36 in. (91.5 cm) along diagonal edge, ending with a Row 1. Remove markers

Second Half
Rows 1 and 2: Rep Rows 1 and 2 of First Half. Place a marker at beg of Row 2 for decrease edge. Place a different color marker at end of Row 2 for increase edge.
Row 3: Rep Row 1 of First Half.
Rep Rows 2 and 3 until Second Half measures same as First Half. Bind off.

FINISHING
Weave in ends.
