GAUGE:

Rnds 1–2 = 4 in. (10 cm); Hexagon = 7 1/2 in. (19.5 cm) BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

dc2tog (dc dec) Yarn over, insert hook into st and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops. Yarn over, insert hook into next st and draw up a loop. Yarn over, draw through 2 loops, yarn over and draw through all loops on hook. dc3tog (dc dec) Yarn over, insert hook into st and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops. (Yarn over, insert hook into next st and draw up a loop. Yarn over, draw through 2 loops) twice, yarn over and draw through all loops on hook. ch-join: Drop loop from hook, insert hook from RS to WS in corresponding ch-sp of neighboring Wedge, pick up loop and draw to RS. ch-2-join: If there is a neighboring Hexagon work (ch 1, ch-join, ch 1), otherwise work ch 2 only (do not join). ch-4-join: If there is a neighboring Hexagon work (ch 2, ch-join, ch 2), otherwise work ch 4 only (do not join).

NOTES:

1. The Afghan consists of 53 individually-crocheted motifs. The motifs are joined when the edging round is worked.
2. A border is added after the Afghan is assembled.

HEXAGON 1 (make 18)
With C, ch 4; join with sl st in first ch to form a ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 2, dc2tog in ring, ch 2, (dc3tog, ch 2) 5 times; join with sl st in first dc2tog—6 ch-2 sps. Fasten off C.
Rnd 2: Join D with sl st in any ch-2 sp, ch 3 (counts as first dc here and throughout), 3 dc in same ch-2 sp, ch 1, (4 dc in next ch-2 sp, ch 1) 5 times; join with sl st in top of beg ch. Fasten off D.
Rnd 3: Join A with sl st in any ch-1 sp, ch 3, (2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in same ch-2 sp, ch 2, *(3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in next ch-1 sp (shell made), ch 2; rep from * 4 more times; join with sl st in top of beg ch. Fasten off.

HEXAGON 2 (make 18)
Make as for Hexagon 1 using the following color sequence: Work Rnd 1 with B, work Rnd 2 with D, work Rnd 3 with C.

HEXAGON 3 (make 17)
Make as for Hexagon 1 using the following color sequence: Work Rnd 1 with A, work Rnd 2 with C, work Rnd 3 with E.

1. Work Edging with B on Hexagons 1 and 3, and with A on Hexagon 2.
2.Arrange Hexagons according to Assembly Diagram. Work non-joining edging around first Hexagon of first Row. Work joining edging around all remaining Hexagons.
Non-Joining Edging (for first Hexagon of first row)
With RS facing, join yarn with sl st in any ch-2 sp between shells of Rnd 3.
Rnd 1: Ch 1, (sc, ch 2, sc) in same sp as join, ch 3, (sc, ch 4, sc) in next ch-2 sp, ch 3, *(sc, ch 2, sc) in next ch-2 sp, ch 3, (sc, ch 4, sc) in next ch-2 sp, ch 3,; rep from * around; join with sl st in first sc. Fasten off.
Joining Edging (for all other Hexagons)
With RS facing, join yarn with sl st in any ch-2 sp between shells of Rnd 3.
Rnd 1: Ch 1, (sc, ch-2-join, sc) in same sp as join, ch 3, (sc, ch-4-join, sc) in next ch-2 sp, ch 3, *(sc, ch-2-join, sc) in next ch-2 sp, ch 3, (sc, ch-4-join, sc) in next ch-2 sp, ch 3; rep from * around; join with sl st in first sc. Fasten off.

Border
With RS facing, join B with sl st in any corner ch-4 sp.
