GAUGE:

16 sts + 32 rows (16 ridges) = 4 in. [10 cm] in garter st. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Knit Oh-So-Simple Cardigan Reviewed by Deborah Borawski on 2011-12-09 ****
I made this pattern and it turned out very nicely. There are two things that could have been better, however. There is a lot of bulk at the underarm by using as many rows as the pattern calls for the sleeve opening. The other issue is that the pockets are so heavy in front that it seems to pull the front of the sweater down lower than the back of the sweater, and I have never liked that look. I would suggested foregoing the pockets.
