GAUGE:

17 sc = 4 in. (10 cm)
EXACT GAUGE IS NOT ESSENTIAL FOR THIS PROJECT
BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

NOTES:

To change color, work last stitch of old color to last yarn over. Yarn over with new color and draw through all loops on hook to complete stitch.

WASHCLOTH
With A, ch 4, join with sl st in first ch to form a ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 1, 2 sc in ring, change to B, 2 sc in ring, join with sl st in first sc, turn.
Rnd 2: Ch 1, 3 sc in each of the first 2 sc, change to A, 3 sc in each of the last 2 sc, join with sl st in first sc, turn - 12 sc.
Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in first sc, 3 sc in next sc, sc in each of the next 2 sc, 3 sc in next sc, sc in next sc, change to B, sc in next sc, 3 sc in next sc, sc in each of the next 2 sc, 3 sc in next sc, sc in last sc, join with sl st in first sc, turn - 20 sc.
Rnd 4: Ch 1, sc in each of the first 2 sc, 3 sc in next sc, sc in each of the next 4 sc, 3 sc in next sc, sc in each of the next 2 sc, change to A, sc in each of the next 2 sc, 3 sc in next sc, sc in each of the next 4 sc, 3 sc in next sc, sc in each of the last 2 sc, join with sl st in first sc, turn - 28 sc.

I actually only did the inner and middle rings of squares and it was big enough. I also made the center block one color and the next ring around it another so I didn't have to switch back and forth.
