GAUGE:

One block measures about 17 1/2 x 18 1/2 in. (44.5 x 47 cm) with 2 strands of yarn held tog. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

2/1 LPC (2 over 1 left purl cross) Sl 2 sts to cable needle, hold in front, p1, then k2 from cable needle. 2/1 RPC (2 over 1 right purl cross) Sl 1 st to cable needle, hold in back, k2, then p1 from cable needle. 2/2 LC (2 over 2 left cross) Sl 2 sts to cable needle, hold in front, k2, then k2 from cable needle. 2/2 RC (2 over 2 right cross) Sl 2 sts to cable needle, hold in back, k2, then k2 from cable needle. AFGHAN
BLOCK (make 12)
With 2 strands held tog, cast on 85 sts.
Row 1 (WS): K3, place marker, work Row 1 of Cable pattern 2 over next 15 sts, place marker; work Row 1 of Cable pattern 1 over next 49 sts, place marker; work Row 1 of Cable pattern 2 over next 15 sts, k3.
Row 2: P3, work Row 2 of Cable pattern 2 over next 15 sts; work Row 2 of Cable pattern 1 over next 49 sts; work Row 2 of Cable pattern 2 over next 15 sts, p3.
Rows 3-87: Keeping first and last 3 sts in reverse Stockinette st (p on RS, k on WS), continue in Cable patterns as established, thus ending with a Row 3 of Cable pattern 1 and a Row 7 of Cable pattern 2. Bind off.

FINISHING
Alternating directions, sew blocks into 3 strips of 4 blocks each. Seam strips to make Afghan.
Edging
Rnd 1: From RS, with crochet hook, join 2 strands of yarn with sc anywhere along outside edge of Afghan. Work sc evenly spaced around entire outer edge, working 3 sc in each corner; join with sl st in first sc.
Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in each st around, working 3 sc in each corner; join with sl st in first sc. Fasten off.
BANDED TASSEL (make 4)
Wrap yarn around 7 in. (18 cm) cardboard 45 times. Cut a piece of yarn 16 in. (40.5 cm) long and thread, doubled, into large-eyed blunt needle. Insert needle under all strands at upper edge of cardboard. Pull tightly and knot securely near strands. Cut yarn loops at lower edge of cardboard. Cut a piece of yarn 8 in. (20.5 cm) long and wrap tightly around loops 2 in. (5 cm) below top knot to form tassel neck. Knot securely; thread ends onto needle and weave ends to center of Tassel. Trim Tassel ends evenly.
Band
Cast on 10 sts, then bind off these same sts. Wrap band over tassel neck. Sew ends of band together. Tie a Tassel to each corner of Afghan. Weave in ends.
