GAUGE:

18 sts + 24 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS) with larger needles. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

NOTES:

1. Lines and motifs are worked in duplicate st after Afghan is knitted. Lines form a grid that is 5 blocks wide and 7 blocks high. Motifs are worked in alternate blocks.
2. Circular needles are used to accommodate large number of stitches. Work back and forth as If working on straight needles.

BODY
With larger needle and A, cast on 119 sts. Work in St st (k on RS, p on WS) for 202 rows. Bind off.

DUPLICATE STITCH LINES AND MOTIFS
Duplicate stitch the lines and motifs as indicated on chart below.

FINISHING
Side Border

With RS facing, smaller needle, and B, pick up and knit 163 sts along (long) edge of Afghan. Work in Garter st (k every row) for 6 rows, inc 1 st each end of every RS row. Change to E and work in Garter st for 6 rows, inc 1 st each end of every RS row. Bind off. Rep along opposite side.

End Border
With RS facing, smaller needle, and B, pick up and knit 119 sts along short end of Afghan. Work as for Side Border. Bind off. Rep Border along opposite end.

Sew corners of Borders together. Weave in ends.

Just Ducky Baby Afghan Reviewed by therese kelley on 2011-03-30 *****
I finally finished my Ducky Afghan and it's beautiful! I had no problems following the grid but that may be because I embroider, including counted cross stitch. However, none of the designs are that complicated. My BIG problem was embroidering the horizontal green lines and keeping them straight; the vertical lines were easy to embroider. If I ever do the blanket again, I have an idea on getting the horizontal lines in easier.

My suggestion on skill level is to keep it as "Easy" because the blanket is a plain knit, pearl. I would, though, emphasize that it would be easier to complete if you have some embroidery knowledge.
