GAUGE:

Each Square measures 8¼ in. x 8¼ in. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

PATTERN (multiple of 2 sts): Foundation row: Purl. Row 1 (WS): *K 1, k 1 in row below; rep from * to last 2 sts, k 2. Rows 2-6: Rep Row 1. Row 7: K 2, *k 1 in row below, k 1; rep from * to end. Rows 8-12: Rep Row 7. Rep Rows 1-12 for pat.

SQUARES (make 35):
With A, cast on 30 sts. Work in pat in the foll color sequence:
With A, rep Rows 1-12 once, then Rows 1-6 once.
With B, rep Rows 7-12 once, then Rows 1-12 once.
With C, rep Rows 1-12 once, then Rows 1-6 once.
With D, rep Rows 7-12 once, then Rows 1-12 once.
Bind off as for Row 12 in pat.

FINISHING: Sew Squares tog, 5 across x 7 down as pictured.
Border: Top edge: With RS facing and A, PU and k 143 sts evenly along top edge. Work in garter st (= k every row) for 8 rows, inc 1 st at beg and end of every other row. Bind off.
Bottom edge: Work same as top edge.
Side edges: With RS facing and A, PU and k 203 sts evenly along side edge. Work in garter st for 8 rows. Bind off. Work same along other side edge.
