Lyra's Knit Hood
Lion BrandŽ Wool-Ease® Thick & Quick® - Wool-Ease® Chunky
GAUGE: 4 stitches = 4 in. (10 cm) in Stockinette stitch (knit on right side, purl on wrong side) with 2 strands of A and 1 strand of B held together.
EXACT GAUGE IS NOT ESSENTIAL FOR THIS PROJECT.
BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

HOOD
NOTE: Divide A into 2 balls.
Beginning at face edge and with 2 strands of A and 1 strand of B held together, cast on 18 (22) stitches.
Work in Stockinette stitch (knit one row, purl one row) until piece measures about 9 (10-1/2) in. (23 (27) cm) from beginning. Slip 9 (11) stitches onto a spare needle, size 19 or any smaller size. Fold piece so needles are parallel, with wrong sides of each half of Hood together. Hold these 2 needles in left hand.
With empty needle, knit 2 together (1 stitch from each needle) twice - 2 stitches on right hand needle. Bind off first stitch over stitch just knitted. Repeat across until all stitches are bound off. Cut yarns and pull ends through last stitch to finish.
FINISHING
Ties
Cut 4 strands of A and 3 strands of B, each 30 in. (76 cm) long. Knot all strands of A and B together. Divide strands into 3 groups and braid together. Knot ends leaving about 5 in. (12.5 cm) unbraided. Knot other end of braid inside Hood.
Work other tie in same manner.
Weave in ends.

This is a really easy pattern and once you've made one you can make several, they look adorable on kids and adults alike; you need to change the amount of cast on stitches for larger hood size and go about 12" in St st.
I make the ties by twisting the yarns instead of braiding. I have also combined quite a few different yarns of different weights and colors, when I do that I use a larger needle but no matter the combination it always turns out fabulous!!! A great way to use up some of your leftover stash, too.
