Amigurumi Berry-Topped Cupcakes Reviewed by Theresa Albania on 2012-07-26 *****
I gave my knitting needles away quite a while ago, and now must improvise. So for the cupcake sides , using a size G crochet hook and beige vanna's choice yarn, i made a chain about the height the side of the cupcake should be and simply worked alternating rows of single crochet and half double crochets in the back loops only to make the ridges that knit one, purle one would make. i made the strip as long as necessary to go around the base and fit the top.i like this method because the rows are nice and short and it's easy to stop when the strip is long enough.

Alternatively, you could try making the starting chain for the cupcake sides as long as the entire strip would need to be to go around the whole base of the cupcake, and work back and forth across that long chain untill the desired hight of the side is reached. if you try that way, you'll have to use front post stitches positioned on top of each other to make the ridges.

i guess you could also try a nook, but i've never tried one yet so i don't know. but i have seen other people substitue crochet sides for knitted ones on cupcakes before too. they just turn out a wee bit bulkier than the knitted version does.
