GAUGE:

12 sc = 4 in. (10cm). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

I have made this hat for 4 guys and one girl that I work with and I found that the pattern is right on for a girls head but it is a little too short and tight for guys so I added two to three rows and left off the reverse single crochet for the guys and they fit and all four loved them, especially those that loved certain football teams and I used the team colors. You have to crochet this loose not tight. Watch your tension carefully is my suggestion. I'm ready to make more want one?
